The position requires a Ordinary Seaman's Merchant Mariner's Document and the ability to pass a drug test.I am the Steward/chef aboard the R/V Western Flyer here at MBARI in Monterey, California and I am looking for a relief cook or cooks to help me out occasionally. Our previous relief cook was one of our AB's who we had sent to culinary school. However, he obtained his mates license and left for other opportunities and I am without a relief now. The R/V Western Flyer is a 110 foot (50 foot beam) SWATH vessel. As such she is extremely stable and quite a bit larger than a normal hulled vessel of the same length. We are the support vessel for the ROV Tiburon, a 4000 meter depth rated remote operated vehicle. We carry 8 crew, 5 ROV pilots, and 13 scientists. We primarily operate in the Monterey or Central California region, from Big Sur to San Francisco, on trips that range from 3-7 days. Every other year or so we undertake longer expeditions of up to 3 months to Oregon, Hawaii, or Mexico. We are owned and operated by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, a world class research facility in Moss Landing California.The galley is a one man operation, but the Ab's are responsible for cleaning, restocking, and maintaining the mess deck. The galley is electric, well equipped, easy to work in and our budget is much more than sufficient to supply anything a chef might want to cook with. The boat is very comfortable and one would find the accommodations superior to anything that they have at Scripps or Woods Hole or anywhere for that matter. I would of course be available to supply and orient any relief to the boat prior to any trip.I take off numerous trips throughout the year. The next one I am taking off is a 7 day trip leaving October 11th. I am not authorized to extend any concrete pay information, but, I assume the 7 day job would pay around $1500.00 to $2000.00.
